Hart Street Transformation: When Will the Lane Changes Take Effect?

VINCENNES, Ind. (We Are Knox County) - Work on Hart Street between Veterans Drive and 15th Street in Vincennes is nearing completion.

On Thursday, the outline of new pavement markings was drafted on the newly paved section.

According to the Vincennes Mayor's Office, permanent markings will be placed on Friday, June 21.

By the end of the day Friday, Hart Street between Veterans Drive and 15th Street will become a two-lane road with a center turn lane and bike lanes on each side.

City leaders believe these changes will enhance safety and improve traffic flow on Hart Street.

However, many people in Vincennes are unhappy with the changes, fearing it will cause more congestion and accidents.

Starting Thursday night, construction will begin on milling and paving Hart Street from Kimmell Road to Richard Bauer Drive, beginning with the outside east and westbound lanes.

During this time, Hart Street will be reduced to one lane in each direction.

Work on Hart Street will continue next week.

Kimmell Road from Hart Street to Ford Road will also be repaved.

The portion of the project is funded through the Indiana Department of Transportation’s Community Crossings Matching Grant Program.

Last year, Vincennes was awarded 1 million dollars through the program for the project.

Due to the size of Vincennes, the city was required to match funds 50/50, resulting in a budget around 2 million dollars for this and other repaving projects this year.

Some other streets repaved in Vincennes through the grant include:

  • Highland Street

  • Barnett Street from 11th Street to 13th Street

  • 13th Street from Main Street to Hart Street

  • Busseron Street from 8th Street to 15th Street.
