VINCENNES, (We Are Knox County) - Dozens of dogs rescued from a heartbreaking hoarding situation in southern Illinois are now getting a second chance, thanks to the efforts of the Vincennes Animal Shelter.

On Tuesday, shelter employees, along with several other area rescues, stepped in to remove the animals from overcrowded and unsanitary conditions.

"The dogs were everywhere. They were going under dressers, behind couches, everywhere," said Assistant Shelter Director Angie Stanley.

The home was filled with waste, making the rescue operation even more challenging.

"We opened the door, and you could see probably five inches of feces throughout the house."

The Vincennes Animal Shelter took in a17 of the rescued dogs along with an additional 7 dogs that will be going to the animal shelter in Brazil, Indiana.

Some of the dogs are pregnant, while others are completely covered in mange and in need of care.

Once back at the shelter, volunteers quickly stepped in to help bathe, vaccinate, and care for the animals.

"We’re giving baths, we’re vaccinating, and trying to get them ready; get to know them, so they can find their forever homes," said Stanley.

Most of the dogs were visibly scared, some curling up in the corners of their crates as they adjusted to their new surroundings.

Others found comfort in the arms of volunteers.

While some of the dogs will remain at the Vincennes Animal Shelter, most will be transferred to other rescues for continued care.

The Vincennes Animal Shelter is asking for community support to help care for the animals rescued from this heartbreaking situation.

The shelter is in urgent need of donations, including dog food, blankets, and multipurpose cleaner.

The rescued dogs staying at the Vincennes Animal Shelter will remain on a five-day hold as they receive medical care and assessment.

Anyone interested in adopting, volunteering, or donating can visit the Vincennes Animal Shelter at 1128 River Road.

The shelter is open Monday through Saturday from 9:00am to 4:00pm and can be reached at 812-882-8826 or through their Facebook page.
