VINCENNES, Ind. (We Are Knox County) - Many drivers in Vincennes have noticed construction crews working along State Road 441.
Several changes are coming to the state-owned road, which runs along Willow Street from Ramsey Road to 6th Street, follows 6th Street from Willow to Vigo Street, and then continues along Vigo Street from 6th Street to the Memorial Bridge.
According to Gary Brian, Public Relations Director for the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) Southwest District, workers are currently coring the road.
"This involves drilling into the road surface to retrieve a sample, allowing INDOT to assess both the current roadway conditions and the underlying surface," he explained.
State Road 441 will undergo a complete makeover soon.
The road will be repaved, ADA-compliant curb ramps will be added to existing sidewalks, and the intersections at 6th Street and Willow Street, as well as 6th Street and Vigo Street, will be upgraded to accommodate larger vehicles like semis.
Bike lanes will be added, and the stoplights at Willow Street and 15th Street, 6th Street and Vigo, and 2nd Street and Vigo will be upgraded.
The most notable change will occur between Niblack Road and 13th Street, where the road will be narrowed from four lanes to two, with a center turn lane and bike lanes on each side.
This redesign, known as a “Road Diet,” is said to improve both traffic flow and safety.
These changes were first announced during a public meeting at Vincennes City Hall in July 2024.
During the meeting, INDOT representatives revealed that there were 142 crashes on State Road 441 between 2020 and 2022, resulting in 29 injuries and 1 fatality.
Brian told WAKC News Now that the project is expected to be completed by the end of the construction season, which typically wraps up in late October, depending on weather conditions.
While short-term closures may occur, full closures are not expected.
